Episode 1: The One About Just Add Dogs!

Updated: Jan 22, 2021

This is the introduction of the brand new podcast Just Add Dogs. This podcast is all about bringing awareness to dog rescue and sharing the heartwarming stories of dogs that were given a second, 3rd or 4th chance. Each episode highlights the rescues, shelters, sanctuaries, and rescuers that are helping change the world for abandoned and homeless dogs one story at a time. In this episode, your host Lindsay, talks a little bit about why she started Just Add Dogs and her hopes for it as it continues. As in every episode, she ends the show by highlighting one adoptable dog from a rescue in her home state of Colorado. See more of that info below!

Underdogs Animal Rescue is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) non profit all-breed animal rescue. We are dedicated to changing the perception of the “underdog” – the forgotten ones, the misunderstood ones, the ones that get picked last (or don’t get picked at all). They give these longshots the opportunity to beat their odds, confident that they will prove that the underdog is the best dog, every single time.

Now onto Sammi! She came to Underdogs from Thailand where she lived at an elephant sanctuary until being flown here in late 2016. She's been fostering with the same Underdogs foster ever since and they think she's just a sweet, sweet doll! When she first arrived in the U.S., she would hide under the couch or bed all day and only come out at night, but she's improved about 1000%. She really likes familiar situations, places, dogs, and people. (For instance, she LOVES her dog friends.) Walks and car rides are still a bit spooky, but she makes strides every day. She loves cuddling in bed at night, and does NOT like being crated. In short, Sammi is a sweet, gentle, timid lovebug who is searching for her very patient and understanding forever home.

Hi everyone and thank you so much for joining me for the very first episode of Just Add Dogs.

I’m your host, Lindsay Eland.

I’m a mother of four, wife to one, spend three of my days as a vet assistant at my local veterinarian clinic, and I’m 100% in love with dogs.

I also believe in the power of stories to change lives and really the world. I’m a traditionally published author of three books for middle grade readers, and I’ve adopted 13 dogs, most of which have been senior dogs, dogs with special needs and special medical conditions. All but four of these 13 souls have passed away in the past four years.

I’ve known the highest highs of adopting my next best friend and falling in love with every little one of their quirks, to the lowest lows when I’ve held them in my arms and had to say goodbye.

But there’ll be more time for all of the ins and outs of those stories in later episodes.

I want to ask you a question now. Or maybe a few questions.

Do you love and adore your furry friend?

Do you click on the links to stories about an elephant being rescued or click to watch a pelican set free from a net? Do you crave stories that make you smile and your heart burst?

Do you need a smile to start off your day?

Do you watch The American Rescue Dog Show on Hallmark each year and treat it like it’s the Oscars?

Do you think that every single dog that you see is the cutest thing ever?

Do you follow almost more pet instagram accounts than human accounts?

Do you just need more dogs in your life?

Well that’s what Just Add Dogs is all about.

Week after week, you can expect to hear interviews with ordinary people who decided to do something extraordinary. What did they do? They saved a life by adopting their new best friend. You’ll hear their stories, including why they decided to adopt, their dogs’ background, and when they first knew it was love at first sight.

You’ll also get to hear from rescues and shelters. They’ll tell you the story about how they got started, and that special dog that began it all.

And each week you’ll hear about a current dog who is in search of their forever home. Maybe he or she is even YOUR next best friend.

We’ll cover other things like special needs dogs and rescues, senior dogs, breed specific rescues, puppy rescues, fostering, transporting, businesses supporting rescue, and advice on saying your first hellos and your final goodbyes.

I promise you, you’ll smile. You’ll realize that there is hope in this big wide world. You’ll turn to your furry friend and maybe have a moment together. You’ll realize how your small and big and in-between acts of kindness can change a story completely.

As someone who is a firm believer in the power of stories to educate, inform, connect and ultimately change lives and the world, it’s not a surprise that I myself listen to these types of podcasts.

I’m easily bored with facts, and if you’re trying to teach me something, you better include a tale about someone who went somewhere and did something and then something else happened if you really want me to take anything away from what you’re saying. If you want me to stick with you until the end of the podcast, I’m going to need a story or two.

So that’s why you’ll be hearing stories.

Afterall, that is really what the heart of dog and animal rescue is all about.

Hearing a story that was going in one way. Lost, forgotten, unloved.

And seeing how that story can change for the better. Found, loved, accepted.

So I won’t be giving you facts, though stories have facts.

I won’t be giving you statistics, though stories make up the statistics.

Instead, I’ll be telling you stories. True stories.

And stories never grow old.

And because I want to start this podcast off right, here, as promised, is a little bio of a dog that is currently looking for his/her forever home. Please remember, that this dog is available, now, at the recording of this podcast. He/she might already be adopted by the time you listen. That said, please visit the rescue’s website for more information on the other dogs waiting for their chance at forever. You’ll find information on applying to be Sammi’s forever family at www.underdogsrescue.org the rescue and on show notes at www.justadddogspodcast.com.
